Welcome to Cartas Con Amor, an organization started by two Carondelet High School students of the Class of 2020, Natalie Ionescu & Jackie Brown. We both have different stories as to why we decided to start Cartas Con Amor. From the beginning, we did not wish Cartas Con Amor to come across as a political organization.
Every person, no matter where he/she is from, deserves a second chance to live a positive life. We were inspired to start Cartas Con Amor because we wanted to counteract the negativity towards immigrants in the media. We want to ensure that all immigrants remain hopeful and inspired. People usually immigrate to find a better life. We are saddened by the mistreatment and stigma behind Latin American immigrants. We want Cartas Con Amor’s letters to show immigrants that they are welcomed and appreciated.
I am a first generation American, coming from an immigrant family. I understand what it means to start a new life in a different country, so I knew how many immigrants felt. Hearing about the mistreatment of asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border made me want to do something to improve their quality of life and show them that they are not alone, and that there are other people thinking, praying, and caring for them. Although I am not Hispanic, my heart goes out to all of the Latin American immigrants trying to start a new life in the US.

I was inspired to start this project after I traveled to Mexico for a mission trip to build houses. I stayed in Tijuana for a week, where I experiences so much love and kindness. On one of the final days, twenty children helped us construct one of the house. I was very touched by the tight knit community and selflessness of the children. I want to return the love and kindness that I received on my trip as well as comfort those those who are trying to immigrate to the United States.
